Is Germany being frozen out of the EU inner circle?

Tuesday 9th December 2008

News that Gordon Brown met the French president and the European commission on Monday has rather upset the German government who were left out of the talks. The talks were aimed at finding a solution for the economic slowdown around the world with specific discussions centred upon the European economy as a whole. Germany has for some time been a superpower in the European Union put the omission from Mondays talks appears to be a clear sign of the future.

Despite falling behind the Tory party at home, Gordon Brown's stock overseas has never been higher and his good working relationship with the French president Nicolas Sarkozy has surprised and impressed many of his political opponents. Somehow he has managed to reposition the UK at the top table after many years on the sidelines after numerous conflicts with the German and French unilateral position of the past.

However, this close relationship with the French president and the European commission has given credence to concerns that the UK is on the verge of joining the euro even though the vast majority of the UK population are against such a move. Whether Gordon Brown would chance a move into the euro prior to the next general election is debatable but there is no doubt there seems to be a growing groundswell towards membership of the euro.
